Scope and Description of Project (What)        
Text Box: Purchase of 85 standard desktop Omni Tech PC's with Windows OS, 128 meg RAM, 17" monitor, video adapter, 20 gig HD, sound, TR NIC needed to keep the Taylor/Burlington facilities from falling behind the rest of the County.  The goal is to get the Taylor/Burlington facilities on the same equipment rotation that the Information Systems Department is on.  This would replace all systems every five years which corresponds with the warranty on the equipment.  This is two years longer than the industry cycle of three years.  As we move to Windows 2000, most of the PC's at Taylor/Burlington will not support the new operating system or current office products.
               
               
               
               
               
               
Justification of Project (Why)          
Text Box: Over 250 PC's at HSD will reach the end of their useful lives at approximately the same time.  The systems were all purchased in 1996 when the Taylor facility was opened.  This package will replace a portion of them, so they don't all cease to operate at the same time.  This schedule will replace all PC's by the time the oldest is seven years old.  At that point, in 2004, the replacement schedule moves to five years or 20% per year.

Impact of not accepting project          
Text Box: At some point, PC's need to be replaced.  They either wear out or will no longer support the applications required of them.  Replacing a portion of the PC's each year keeps the technology current and avoids the potential problem of having to do a mass replacement at one time.
