Scope and Description of Project (What)        
Text Box: Microsoft Office is the County's most critical software.  The County currently uses Office and Back Office Client 97.  This package represents the cost of installing Office and Back Office Client and Outlook 2000 on all County PC's and servers at one time.  The package also includes the cost of replacing Operating Systems and PC's that cannot support the updated software.
               
               
               
               
               
               
Justification of Project (Why)          
Text Box: We are already getting requests to receive or send documents in Office 2000, and as time goes on, this will happen with greater frequency.  In addition to improving communications with non-County entities, the new products also have more desirable features and Internet-enabled options that will improve our ability to place documents and information on our Internet site.
               
               
               
               
               
Alternatives              
Text Box: We are currently testing a mixed environment for the operating systems.  Based on our past experience of having Office 95 and 97 until a few years ago, it will be very difficult to accomplish this.  We are currently trying to identify if there is a way to move just power users, including at least one user in each department, to the new office suite and keep them current through maintenance, leaving all other users on Office 97.  The results of that research are not yet available.
