The Land Conservation Division's purpose is to carry out the legislative intent of Chapter 92, Wisconsin Act 27, ATCP 50, NR 120, 151, 152, 153, 154, 216 and 243. The Legislature finds that the soil resources of this state are being depleted by wind and water erosion and that the waters of this state are being polluted by Nonpoint sources of pollution. Our office provides planning, technical and educational assistance to landowners and units of government in Racine County in the area of soil erosion control and water quality improvements.
We assist landowners in protecting and improving our natural resources by promoting and implementing conservation on the land. Our office provides onsite technical investigations relating to soil erosion, sedimentation, water quality and nutrient management to landowners, Planning & Development, Code Administration and local municipalities.
Our office administers the State Farmland Preservation Program, the Nonpoint Pollution Abatement Program with a project in the Sugar-Honey Creek area, and the Land and Water Resource Management Plan program.
Eliminate excessive soil erosion on all cropland in Racine County.
Continue to meet the objectives of the State mandated goals of the Land and Water Resource Management Plan.
Sponsor the Nonpoint Pollution Abatement Project for the Sugar-Honey Creek Watershed.
Provide technical assistance in engineering and implementation of conservation practices on land.
Conduct onsite investigations for soil erosion, water quality and manure/nutrient management for shoreland contracts from the Planning and Development Division and Code Administration.
Provide conservation planning to farmers for the Farmland Preservation Program, Nonpoint Pollution Abatement projects and the Land and Water Resource Management Plan.
Continue to promote the Conservation Ethic to landowners through education and information.
Continue to sponsor the annual tree sales program in Racine County.
Reduced soil loss by over 45,692 acres under the allow soil loss rate (T), reduced soil loss on 28,054 acres to less than twice the soil loss rate (2T) and over 4,000 acres to less than three times the soil loss (3T) on cropland.
Exceeded our water quality goals in all three sub-watersheds of the Muskego/Wind Lake project.
Worked with the Fox River Commission, Root/Pike River Partnership, Sustainable Racine, and Friends of the Root River.
Published and distributed two newsletters to over 1,500 landowners and provided newspaper articles for local publications.
Provided educational materials/ booths for Zoo Days, tree pick-up days, County Fair, and school speaking engagements.
Provided 255 water quality technical reviews for the Planning & Development and Code Administration.
Created one wetland, converted 348 acres of high erosion to grass and trees, saved over 400 tons of soil from cropland.
Sold 64,500 trees and shrubs. Developed 21 conservation plans.
Sponsored our Environmental Poster Contest.
Worked with Eagle Lake Assoc. to develop a Lake Protection Plan.
