OPERATING AUTHORITY AND PURPOSE

As provided by Chapter 59.34 of the Wisconsin State Statutes, the mission of the Medical Examiner Office is to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the community. This is accomplished by identifying and documenting issues regarding public health as well as the Criminal Justice system, thus meeting the requirements of our statutory mandate.

OBJECTIVES

Continue to update the plans for responding to multiple fatality disasters both east and west of I-94.

Attempt to purchase items necessary for response to mass fatality incidents.

Continue to assist local fire and police agencies in establishing guidelines for cases which require investigation by the Medical Examiner's office and establishing a new significant exposure protocol.

Continue to inform the local community about the role of the Medical Examiner's office by making presentations at local schools, fire departments, police agencies and public service organizations.

Review present computer capabilities for possible updating and expansion.

Attempt to get the Burlington office computers updated.

Update all files and destroy records of old cases that we are not required to retain.

PRIOR YEAR ACHIEVEMENTS

Managed very busy year of 1,208 cases, which represents a slight increase from 1998.

Attended several in-state death investigation schools. 

Contracted with St. Louis University to handle toxicology on non-autopsied cases.

Hosted Tri-County Organ Procurement seminar.

Sponsored several job shadow students.

Gave numerous presentations throughout the County.

Assisted all three of our certified death investigators in maintaining their registration with continuing education requirements. 

Worked with Racine Police Department to present forensic toxicology training to all paramedic classes at Gateway Technical College.

Conducted several Child Death Review meetings with Multi-Jurisdictional Team.

Conducted funeral with RCSD and Draeger-Langendorf for Jane Doe homicide victim.
