As provided by section 59.34 of the Wisconsin Statutes, the mission of the
Medical Examiner's Office is to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the
community by identifying and documenting issues regarding public health as well
as the criminal justice system.
The office investigates all types of deaths within Racine County. The staff also
signs all the necessary papers for cremations, disinternments, death
certificates and other documents related to death.
A goal for this year was to update our computers. We achieved this for our
Racine office computers.
Another goal was to update our files and destroy those old files the law permits
us to get rid of. This was accomplished.
Also accomplished was the establishment of an updated significant exposure
policy.
It is always our goal to handle all cases professionally and to respond quickly
and efficiently to requests for information from attorneys, doctors, families
and other local, state and federal agencies. This year the number of cases and
number of requests for information were higher than the year before, but we were
still able to investigate those cases in greater detail than in previous years.
It is also our goal to keep the staff as well-trained as possible. We achieved
this by sending our deputies to top level schools and training classes.
Another goal was to be better prepared in the event of a mass fatality disaster.
We are working toward this goal by starting to stockpile nonperishable items we
would need.
