In 1997, former County Executive Jean M. Jacobson set up the
Cultural Arts Fund. The fund supplies grants to non-profit organizations or
municipalities in Racine County which develop cultural arts programs aimed at
young people in Racine County schools. Cultural Arts programs are those based on
music, art, dance, theater or literature.
Grants up to $2,000 are awarded by a committee composed of three County Board
Supervisors chosen by the County Board Chairman. When the projects have been
completed, the grant recipients submit reports describing how the programs were
conducted and indicate how the money was spent.
In 2002, the County Board set up the Senior Enhancement fund. The fund supplies grants to non-profit organizations or municipalities in Racine County which serve a population aged 55 years and older.
Grants up to $5,000 are awarded by a committee composed of three County Board Supervisors chosen by the County Board Chairman. Grants are available for operational costs as well as for educational and enhancement programming. Grant recipients provide full accounting for the grants at the end of their fiscal year.
Funding from Racine County allows the Racine Zoological Society to foster an enlightening and affordable wildlife experience that improves the bond between county residents and nature. The Society will provide for the recreation and education of Racine County citizens, the conservation of wildlife and wild places, and the advancement of science.
Racine Heritage Museum is a private, non-profit corporation exercising a wide range of museum functions in a historic building leased from the County. The Museum maintains an archive of over 35,000 items and an artifact collection of over 10,000 items all related to Racine County history. A small staff and more than 100 volunteers produce exhibits and programs, operate the 1888 Bohemian Schoolhouse and its living history program, assist the public with social, industrial and family research, and provide professional support to area museums, cultural, historical and arts agencies, schools, the tourist bureau and organizations and businesses that request it.
This budget allows the Racine Heritage Museum and the Racine Zoological Society one year to structure their funding so that in the future, funds from Racine County will not be needed.
